Sean Dyche felt his players deserved more than to suffer late heartbreak as Spurs snatched all three points at Turf Moor.
The Clarets put in their best 90 minutes of the season and looked the more likely side to score until Son headed home 13 minutes from time from the visitors’ first effort on target.
But Dyche was far from downbeat after seeing his side step up another level from the display that earned a first point of the season, away at West Bromwich Albion.
“There were good signs of us being back to the Burnley we know tonight,” said the Burnley manager.
“I thought we gave a thorough performance at West Brom and probably deserved all three, and tonight we have fallen foul to a soft set-piece by our standards, but I am not going to over-egg that when we have played so well.
“A lot of the performance tonight was right about what we try and do, especially against this quality of side.
“The shape was good, as was the belief in that shape and how we worked from that, in order to stop their tempo and keep their key players quiet.
“But I thought we mixed the game up well in attack too and asked questions.
“We created some good chances, had one cleared off the line and it’s still those big moments that we can tidy up on.
Defender James Tarkowski confident results will follow after Spurs pushed to the limit
“But a lot of the things we are good at were on show. Ultimately, we’ve got nothing for it, but the performances over a season will bring their rewards.”
Dyche, who welcomed back Matt Lowton for his first appearance since June, added: “We are now getting players back truly match fit and sharper and I think the players know, in the past couple of weeks, that we look fit and strong.
“That’s a shift and we still have important players coming back, including Ben Mee, who will get some time in a bounce game on Tuesday.
“The signs are good, but there’s no naivety to it; I’ve been in this game a long time and you have to put the ball in a net at one end and keep it out at the other end, so we have to tidy that up.
“But equally, there has to be a performance level that can win you games and we know that when we play like that, over a season, we win games and get points on the board.”
