James Tarkowski was frustrated the Clarets had nothing to show for their ‘best performance’ of the season after Tottenham left Turf Moor with the points.
Burnley nullified a Spurs team that had scored 11 goals in winning their two previous away games in the Premier League.
But they were unable to stop Heung-Min Son from heading home following a corner to secure a 1-0 win with his side’s only effort on target 13 minutes from time.
And with the Clarets’ biggest chance a Tarkowski header cleared off the line just before Tottenham scored – despite some lengthy spells of pressure – they were forced to swallow a fourth defeat in five games to start the campaign.
“It was probably our best performance so far. Defensively we were really good, apart from the one moment where they get the goal,” said Tarkowski.
“I thought we played well against a team that’s been flying recently, scoring a lot of goals and making a lot of chances.

“I thought we limited them to very little, so there were pleasing aspects. But to concede from a set-piece was disappointing.
“It was a sloppy goal from us and maybe we needed a little bit more quality in the final third to get a few clear-cut chances, although I thought the front two were terrific and caused problems all game against a team that has been going really well.
“There were pleasing aspects, it’s just disappointing not to have got something. Obviously, it’s a results-based business, so we need to start picking up points but there were plenty of positives to build on going into the weekend.
“It’s been a tough start but we’ve got to crack on with it now. There are things to build on and we look forward to the weekend.”
The Clarets face Chelsea at Turf Moor on Saturday still looking for a first league win of the season.
But having out-played Spurs for long spells, Tarkowski believes the signs are there for a more productive run.
“It’s still early. I know it’s not been the best start for us but there are a lot of positives from tonight,” added the Clarets’ defender.
“We looked like the Burnley people know, the way we pressed from the front and caused problems.
“It’s long season. We’ve been in this position before. The group we’ve got, we stick together and we’ve got to crack onto the next game now.
“It’s another tough one at the weekend but there are opportunities to pick up points if we play like that.”
