Sean Dyche admitted to mixed emotions as Burnley’s season “petered out” with a defeat away to relegated Sheffield united.
The Clarets boss felt the relief of ensuring a sixth successive Premier League season contributed to three successive defeats to end a gruelling campaign.
But after injuries again hit hard – with skipper Ben Mee sidelined with a groin problem and Nick Pope facing a race against time to be fit for England’s European Championship campaign in three weeks’ time – Dyche was happy to look at the bigger picture.
“We’ve kind of petered out at the end, but after a big win against Fulham I think there was bound to be a bit of a reaction and that edge just came off us,” confessed Dyche, whose side lost to Leeds, Liverpool and the Blades in the final week.
“For the first time, it was more a feeling of relief than that gusto feeling, after a tough season.
“It’s been a tough finish to the season, and there is a little bit of frustration with the performance.
“We were a bit timid today, but there’s been a lot of good work done by these players and it’s elation I feel over the season.”
Dyche added: “There’s a frustration at the last couple of results, but again we were missing key players and that’s been the story of the season.
“We were without our captain and a fantastic keeper and they are hard slots to fill for a club like ours.
“I can’t imagine that will carry on because next season the games schedule will change – and it needs to.
“It’s been a different kind of achievement this season in many ways with a massive games schedule, the raft of injuries and no fans in the stadiums, yet we still got 39 points, which is not to be scoffed at.”
