Manager Sean Dyche addressed the media ahead of the weekend’s game away at Brentford, and says the Clarets must use recent performances to their advantage.
Dyche on Brentford:
“They’ve been open minded to the challenge that is being in the Premier League. They have been on a really tough run lately but came out of it with a win and an important win.
“They probably look at it as a mixed bag having started the season very well, but things have slowed down a bit for them now. A good win [against Norwich City] has calmed their situation down.
“They’re full of energy and effort and they’ve found a way that has affected the season enough to get to where they’ve got to.”
On recent positive performances:
“In the last nine games, there have been lots of positives and performances, and the players are aware of that going into Saturday.
“On any given day, you find your way of playing, and it’s effective. The idea is to get more consistency and we’ve had a run of games recently where we have found more. We weren’t a million miles away in the last two and it is important to remind ourselves that we have played well.
“[Defensive resilience] is helpful and it’s something to build on. We know the difficulty of scoring and all teams do in the Premier League, but it’s difficult to keep clean sheets as well.
“We’ve shown over many seasons that we know how to defend properly in this division and defend to win games. Historically, we’ve been strong in the second half of the season on the defensive side of the game.”
On going up against a team from the lower end of the table:
“[Pressure on games] often comes from the media but know the demands of the league. Outside of the top six, you get windows to get more wins and particularly away from home. It’s still about us playing as we have done in previous games though.
“It’s a different kind of game against Brentford. They’re making a strong showing of themselves this season and have come out of a tough period. There’s work to be done for them and for us.
“It’s not a six pointer when you beat a team at the top end of the table, it’s just another three points on the board.”
On other teams playing games while Burnley are out of action:
“I do think that it would’ve been helpful to play [rather than being out of action for three weeks], especially because we have a backlog of games compared to others.
“We didn’t want to lose another [in Southampton] but that couldn’t be changed, and our next challenge now is to fit those fixtures in and get on with playing.
“Other teams’ games are of no interest to me, I can’t win or lose their games for them. If they lose and we win, then that’s obviously beneficial to us, but I can’t make that happen. I put my focus and energy into what we do here and what I can affect.”
