Owen Dodgson says he and his U21s teammates must continue their hard work after a 3-0 win over Barnsley at Turf Moor yesterday afternoon in front of just over 200 Clarets supporters.
The versatile full back, who played as part of a back three against the Tykes, added a second goal of the season to his tally alongside goals from Michael Mellon & a Trialist.
Lancaster-born, Dodgson made his debut at senior level in the Emirates FA Cup last season. Putting pen to paper on a three-year deal over the summer, he has since been named on the bench four times by Vincent Kompany and says he’s learning every day.
Dodgson on the U21s win against Barnsley and his goal:
“I’m buzzing for the lads. Obviously, we’ve had a few defeats lately, but we came into this game with a positive mindset and got the win.
“We changed formation today and went for the three at the back. When the ball came across to me, I just continued my run and stepped in.
“I’ve got a bit excited, continued my run into the box and then when Mike [Mellon]’s played it to me I finished it off. I’m just buzzing with the results, buzzing with the lads and ready for the next game.”
Dodgson on playing at Turf Moor:
“Some of the lads might not have experienced that before. When we played our good stuff, you could hear them cheering etc. which obviously makes us want to play even more.
“Coming away with a 3-0 win is big for ourselves and we’ll take it into the next game, hopefully get another one on the board.”
Dodgson on being involved at first-team level:
“Training with them all the time really helps me. I know the way the gaffer wants us to play and we’re taking that into the way that the U21s play.
“The lads are getting more and more used to it, but we all know that we’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing and improving day by day, game by game. We’ll see where it takes us.”
Dodgson on the Clarets academy pathway:
“The gaffer has given all of us young lads chances, and Joe Bauress & Marcel [Lewis] making their debuts the other night [against Crawley Town], I’m buzzing for them.
“We all work as hard as we can do in training, and as you see by last week with those two being given the chance, it gives opportunities.
“The other younger lads can see that and see that if you keep working hard, then you never know, you might be given a chance.”
Dodgson on continuous improvement:
“Today’s win was hopefully the first step to getting back on the right track with the U21s results wise.
“The first-team are flying at the moment, and we want to be doing just as well at this level. At the end of the day, if we’re all putting in good performances here, that’s the only way for us all to progress.
“For me, and most of the lads playing U21s football, we’re just at the beginning of our careers. It’s about looking to improve all the time, and finding the little margins in our game to help us do that.”
