Josh Cullen said that whilst he felt the Clarets could have scored more goals in Tuesday night's win against Oxford United, the main thing was to come away with the three points.

Speaking after the game, the 28-year-old reflected on a dominant first half display, showing more attacking intent and taking the positives into the next run of games.

"The most important thing is the three points. Not great conditions in the second half especially when the hailstones started coming down.

“I think we were really good first half, probably should have been out of sight to be honest. Should have been more than one goal definitely. Sometimes when you can’t get as many goals as you like, it’s important to keep another clean sheet like we did and make sure that we won the game.”

Cullen set up the opener which was turned into the net by Michał Helik, in a first half display which saw Scott Parker's men insert their dominance on the visitors and come close on several occasions through Lyle Foster and Zian Flemming.

“I think we created a lot tonight first half, the first 20/25 minutes and should have had more than one goal that’s for sure. But it wasn’t to be. We took the goal that we got, and we had to make sure that we were solid, like we have been for a lot of the season and make sure that we came away with three points.”

The Clarets have been on the end of a number of goalless draws so far this campaign. Following Saturday's 0-0 at Fratton Park goalkeeper James Trafford said that the lack of goals wasn't down to a lack of effort, did Cullen feel like the urgency and endeavour shown tonight highlighted this further?

“Definitely. I think the first half, we created a lot of clear-cut chances, and we know, we’re critical of ourselves as a group and we know that we have to put that game to bed, and it should be three or four.

“However, it wasn’t to be, like Traff said it’s not through a lack of effort. The lads are putting a lot of work in, we created a lot of chances tonight which is a good sign. I suppose you’d be more worried if we didn’t create anything. So, we created the chances we didn’t quite manage to take them, but the main thing was getting three points and that’s what we’ve got.”

And on a wet and windy night with plenty of hailstone, the fans really got behind that endeavour?

“That’s the football they want to see and that’s the football we want to play, so I think that goes hand in hand. We thank them for their support like always and we move onto the next one.”

The three points close the gap to just two points behind league leaders Leeds. With a lot of football still to play is it a case of taking the positives from the performance and moving onto the next?

“We just have to concentrate on ourselves. There’re 15 or 16 games left so we’ve just got to make sure we get as many points as we can in the next 15 games. Let everyone else worry about themselves, we’ll worry about ourselves, get as many points as we can and see where we end up.”
