Midfielder Josh Cullen scored the only goal in a tightly fought encounter between Burnley and Stoke City on Friday night.
The home side kept the high scoring Clarets at bay for large periods of the game, before a breakthrough in the 60th minute when Josh Cullen found the back of the net in a crowded box to put the league leaders ahead.
Speaking after the game, the midfielder said: “We’re delighted with the result. It wasn’t an easy game, but I think they are the type of games that we need to win if we want to have a successful season. So, yeah, a tough night’s work but a good night’s work and we take three points and move onto the next one.”
On his goal, his first of the campaign, he added: “I’m really happy to get the goal but I’m sure like everyone says, the main thing was getting the three points tonight and coming away with the win. I’m happy to contribute but the main thing was the points.”
Alongside Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Josh Brownhill, Cullen has made the most appearances for the Clarets so far this season and he’s relishing the game time.
“It’s great to be playing a lot of matches. We’ve got a really good squad and a lot of work goes on behind the scenes from all the lads, pushing each other every day in training so yeah, it’s a privilege every time I get to put the shirt on and play in games. I’m happy with that and hopefully it can continue.”
A key factor in Burnley's success has been the midfield partnership between Cullen and Jack Cork.
“I always say, it makes it easier when you play with good players, Corky’s a top player. Played at the top level for so long so I’m really enjoying playing alongside him this season and hopefully, like I said, it can continue.”
Finally, the New Year brings with it a trip to Wales, with the Clarets set to face Swansea City on the 2nd January.
“We’ll take the positives [from today's game] but I’m sure there’s plenty of stuff that we’ll review, that we need to work on as well in the performance. It’s a quick turnaround, so it’s just a matter of moving onto the next one as quick as possible, recovering well, analysing where we can get better and try to go to Swansea and get another good result.”
