Josh Cullen said he is raring to go against Leeds United on Saturday following a short international break.

The Clarets captain linked up with the Republic of Ireland and featured in the side's narrow 1-0 defeat to Portugal but returned to Burnley early as he was suspended for the second game against Armenia.

Cullen and the squad arrive at Saturday's game against Leeds on the back of a disappointing result at Villa Park last time out. After the game Head Coach Scott Parker said he felt the team 'switched off and lacked a little bit of nous in managing the game.' Does Cullen have the same reflections?

“Yes definitely, I think there’s a lot of positives we can take from the start of the season, not only the Villa game. We’ve done a lot of good things. But I think the manager is exactly right, there’s moments in this league that you get punished for and as a group we have to make sure that in training, we're training with the right habits and making sure that every day we're paying attention to these details, driving it as a group. That we're pulling each other up when we need to, to make sure that we're basically training the way that we want to play at the weekend.

“That’s not only the effort and the technical quality; it’s also the concentration for all moments of the game because in the Premier League, we know you can get punished and that's probably what hurt us in the Villa game and in a couple of other fixtures this season to be honest.

“It’s fine margins, small details that have cost us. But I think there’s a lot of positives that we can take and I’m looking forward to getting back to it this weekend at home and going again.”

The midfielder has made a good start to the campaign and whilst happy with how he's been playing to the captain it's all about how the team are performing.

"I've been pleased with how I've been playing. But I think about the team more than myself. So as long as I'm doing my job to the best I can, doing what a manager asks of me, then that's my main focus.

“I think the team have been performing well in general. It’s just small details, fine margins we need to tidy up on and I’m sure we’ll be ok.”

But he's enjoying his leadership role as captain?

“I do; it’s an easy dressing room to be captain of because we've got a lot of great characters. The lads that we’ve signed have all come in and really wanted to buy into what the group is about. The lads that were here before knew what it was about and they’re the ones that I suppose the foundation is built on, that other people need to buy into.

“I just want to be the best captain I can be, on the pitch and off the pitch. I hope I make the lads feel comfortable, that they can speak to me about anything they need to. Also, that I can having been here a while now and worked with the manager last season, any sort of detail that they might not quite understand I feel like I can be a good connector between the manager and the rest of the team.

“It’s something I’m enjoying, I’m really happy at the minute.”

Daniel Farke's Leeds United are the visitors on Saturday afternoon, and Cullen is expecting a tough test against the familiar opponents.

“We know they’re all-round good side; we came up against them in the Championship. They’ve obviously added to their squad as well so we’ve touched on little areas where they might have made little tweaks. We’ve learnt from the two games we had against them last year, still having the same manager, they’ll have the same similarities, style and habits that they had as a team.

“We know it’s going to be a tough test; we know that they’ve got threats that we’ll need to nullify, and we’ll look at the areas that we feel we can expose them, like any team.

“We know they’re a good side and we’re going to prepare as we always do, with a lot of detail and focus, and know what we’re coming up against. Then it’ll be down to us to deliver the best version of ourselves on Saturday and give ourselves the best chance of getting three points.”

Keen to get back on home turf, the captain also stressed just how important the home fans support was going to be.

“It's huge. I can’t tell you enough, when you’ve got that atmosphere and the fans behind us at home, especially in the Premier League where we need that all the time. Every bit of energy we can get. It’s been great to see how they’ve supported us so far this season, home and away, they’ve been magnificent and backed us. All I can ask is that they continue that, keep supporting us through thick and thin because we’re going to need them in some tough moments and we’re going to need to enjoy the good moments with them as well.

“As a Club I think we have it really good, that we’re all in it together and we’re all fighting for each other. As long as the fans see a team out there that’s fighting and trying to do the best for them, then we know they’ll get behind us. I’m sure Turf Moor will be rocking again on Saturday.”
