Aaron Lennon’s second goal in three games earned Burnley a point in a 1-1 draw away at Crystal Palace on Saturday (26th February).
Lennon struck a minute after half-time to cancel out Jeffrey Schlupp’s early opener to secure a share of the spoils.
Manager Sean Dyche named an unchanged line up for the game at Selhurst Park following last Wednesday’s win against Champions League hopefuls, Tottenham Hotspur. However, Maxwel Cornet, Charlie Taylor and Ashley Westwood returned to the bench for the Clarets.
Meanwhile, hosts Palace, also coming into the game off the back of a strong win at Watford, named English international Conor Gallagher in their team, and Cornet’s Ivory Coast international team mate, Wilfried Zaha.
First half
Cheered on by a sell-out away end in South London, Burnley had the first shot on goal with four minutes played, Lennon firing wide from the edge of the box.
However, with their first attack, Palace took the lead with nine minutes on the clock, as Schlupp got on the end of Michael Olise’s cross to tap home.
Olise, who grabbed the assist for the opening goal, curled a free-kick over the cross bar minutes later, another good chance for the Eagles.
Burnley were going through a period of the game in which they had to withstand Palace pressure, with full backs Tyrik Mitchell and Nathaniel Clyne both having shots blocked and saved. In the 20th minute, Olise had a shot which flew just over the bar.
The visitors created a couple of half chances just before a fine stop from Nick Pope denied Olise from just inside the penalty area, with a bending effort towards the far post to finish the first half.
Second half
Burnley started the restart in emphatic fashion and within sixty seconds scored an equaliser as Lennon netted his second goal in three games.
A beautiful flick on from Jay Rodriguez picked out the former Tottenham man, and his shot found a way past Jack Butland to make it 1-1.
Burnley looked reenergised after the half time break, and nearly turned the game on his head when Wout Weghorst was denied by the fingertips of Butland from a corner.
Burnley made a double change just before the hour mark, with Erik Pieters coming off through injury, Taylor entering the game. The other change saw Westwood come on for Jack Cork.
Weghorst had a goal chalked off for offside with 23 minutes to go, as the front man strayed just offside before finishing eloquently.
Zaha had two golden chances within the space of 60 seconds for Patrick Vieira’s men, the first pushed away by Pope and the second rattled against the post, let off for the Clarets.
Burnley saw out the five minutes of additional time to make it three games unbeaten in the Premier League.
