Jack Cork described his feelings as mixed post Burnley's exit from the Carabao Cup.
The Clarets were undone on the evening by goals from Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford, however the Captain believed the team should be proud of coming to Old Trafford and implementing their style of play in the fixture.
“It’s mixed really [on his feelings post-game]. Disappointed we’re out; it was always going to be tough coming to Old Trafford. I feel that the way we’re trying to play, we’re trying to play similarly to how they are, but they’ve been doing it for a long time. They’ve got a lot of international players, playing at the top level, we’re trying to match the sort of system they were doing. I think at times we had a lot of the ball; we created chances and are unlucky not to get a goal and we were punished really by some quality players.”
On describing the two goals, he added: “It was a great goal [Eriksen's], not that it was sort of out of nothing, but I suppose they had a couple of little chances from sloppy passes first half. It’s just a little bit deflating when you’re trying to get into the game. We lasted half an hour, had a bit of the ball but yeah just a little bit gutted with that. I’m proud of the lads, came here, tried to play the right way, tried to play the way we’ve been trying to play this season and do the right things, and at times it nearly worked.”
Chances did come for the Clarets throughout the 90 minutes.
“Barnsey had a couple of chances, Darko had one, Twiney, we had the moment with the goalie first half, the goalie got tackled second half.
"We had real positive moments, we caught them out in the press quite a lot of times. I think we had one with the square ball from McTominey, we cut out there. A couple in the first half got cut out. It worked a few times, I think just the difference between the Premier League and where we are at the minute just by the way we got punished by them from, not our mistakes, but just half chances that they turned into goals.”
The number four believes the taste of Old Trafford will inspire the players, making them hungry for a return to the Premier League.
“We said that before the game. This is where we want to be, this is hopefully our reward for us for a successful season this year, that we get to play at places like this next year. We’ve got to keep doing what we’ve done to get this far and it’s going to be a tough three/four months. This is where we want to be and all the lads know that. We tried to come here and enjoy it and get a taste for it. I’m sure it’s made everyone hungry for more.”
Finally, the Clarets sold out the away end for the fixture and the support has not gone unnoticed by Cork and the squad.
“They’ve been incredible all season [the fans]. I don’t know what it is if it’s the excitement about the club at the minute, but it just feels like a real good place, a good club to be part of at the minute. In the club, the staff, the players and the fans, it’s just a real positive atmosphere at the minute. You can tell from games like today, we bring 7,500. Every away game we’ve had we’ve basically sold out and it’s been great to be part of. I’ve enjoyed working with them.”
