Burnley Football Club joins the country in mourning the death of HRH, The Duke of Edinburgh.
Prince Philip passed away on Friday, just two months short of his 100th birthday.
And the club has a special affinity with Prince Philip, following a long association with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Scheme for young people.
Turf Moor opened its doors to The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in 2006 and quickly established itself as the largest football club DofE group in Britain, offering hundreds of youngsters the chance to develop and grow through the scheme.
The DofE scheme continues to support young persons in Burnley, although activities have been placed on hold for the last year due to the Covid pandemic.
The Prince also accompanied the Queen to Turf Moor in 2012, as consort, as the monarch celebrated her Diamond Jubilee and 60 years on the throne.

Former Burnley FC Chairman and club director Mike Garlick said: “It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Prince Philip.
“We felt inextricably linked with the Prince through our award-winning Duke of Edinburgh’s Scheme, which has gone from strength to strength through our community team.
“We look forward to starting the scheme up again in the near future, as young people continue to take inspiration from someone who dedicated their life to the service of this country.”
The flag at Turf Moor will fly at half mast until the funeral of Prince Philip, next Saturday.
A two-minute silence will also take place ahead of Sunday’s Premier League game against Newcastle United, in line with tributes carried out elsewhere in sport this weekend.
