31/12/2016 – Burnley 4 – 1 Sunderland (Turf Moor)

Andre Gray became the first ever Burnley player to grab a Premier League hat-trick, as the Clarets came out deserved winners in a 4-1 victory over Sunderland at Turf Moor.

The striker scored his first of the night on the half-hour mark after taking advantage of a defensive mix-up, before rounding Vito Mannone for his second and then firing home his third seven minutes into the second-half.

Ashley Barnes added a fourth of the night from the spot, with Jermain Defoe snatching a late consolation goal for the Black Cats.

The visitors started on the front foot in Lancashire, but an early injury to defender Lamine Kone saw the Ivory Coast international forced off midway through the first-half, which looked like a sign of things to come for the visitors.

John O'Shea dropped back into defence from midfield to partner Papy Djilobodji and just minutes later the pair got in one another's way for the opening goal, as Scott Arfield's long ball bounced off O'Shea's shoulder and into the path of Gray to run on and slot home past Mannone.

The goal gave the Clarets confidence in going forward, as Sean Dyche's side came close to a second goal when Stephen Ward steered over Matt Lowton's cross.

With Burnley ahead at the break, Sunderland's evening got even worse just eight minutes into the second-half, as the hosts bagged two quick-fire goals which saw Gray seal his hat-trick.

The first came from Dean Marney's ball over the top, with Gray shaking off Djilobodji and finishing coolly into an empty goal after racing round the oncoming Mannone.

Just three minutes later, the hat-trick was sealed when Barnes chested down Steven Defour's pass into the path of Gray, with the striker finishing first time from inside the area

A fourth goal of the game arrived with over 20 minutes still left on the clock, after Seb Larsson brought down Arfield and Barnes stepped up to the spot to hammer home from 12-yards.

Sunderland grabbed a late consolation goal through Defoe, as the former England striker latched onto Adnan Januzaj's cross and struck low past Tom Heaton.
