25/01/2011 – Portsmouth 1 – 2 Burnley (Fratton Park)
First-half goals from Jay Rodriguez and Dean Marney gave Burnley all three points at Fratton Park, as the Clarets secured their second away win of the campaign.
The visitors took the lead just past the half-hour mark through Rodriguez's strike, before Pompey pulled the scores level through John Utaka just two minutes later.
However, the goals weren't stopping there. In a frantic six minutes Burnley regained their lead again just four minutes after the hosts had equalised, with Marney's over-head kick turning out to be the winning goal.
Burnley started bright on the south coast, as Wade Elliott looked to pick out Steven Thompson inside the area, but goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown was there to gather it.
The hosts looked to respond to the Clarets' early pressure, as Liam Lawrence picked up the ball outside the area, but could only fire just over the crossbar from 18-yards out.
A Danny Fox cross was then met by the head of Michael Duff shortly after, but the defender saw his effort denied by the hands of Ashdown.
It was an end-to-end first half from both teams and Pompey had another effort midway through the opening 45 minutes, when Kanu saw his long range strike gathered by Lee Grant.
The Clarets then got their opener just after the half-hour mark when Fox was given time and space on the left wing to cross into the area for Rodriguez, who fired in first time into the bottom corner to give Eddie Howe's side the lead.
However, that lead only lasted a couple of minutes, as Portsmouth struck back through Utaka. Kanu teed up the forward outside the area to rifle into the top corner and draw the scores level.
Just four minutes later the Clarets were back in front though, when Thompson saw his initial effort parried into the path of Marney, who followed up with an over-head kick to restore the visitors' lead before half-time.
Burnley came out searching for a third goal in the second-half, when Chris Eagles saw his shot fizz just wide of the target, before Rodriguez came close to grabbing his second, but his header was pushed wide by Ashdown.
Despite a flurry of late crosses into the area and pressure from the home side, the Clarets defended resiliently to ensure all three points returned to Lancashire.
