21/10/2008 – Coventry City 1 – 3 Burnley (Ricoh Arena)
Substitute Chris Eagles came off the bench to inspire the Clarets to victory against Coventry City after setting up the winner in the 88th minute, before hitting the back of the net himself with a spectacular effort minutes later.
Coventry took the lead from the penalty spot just before half-time, before defender Michael Duff pulled the scores level six minutes into the second-half.
Eagles was then introduced in the 71st minute and the winger went on to set up Robbie Blake to put Burnley ahead with two minutes left to play, before rounding the night off with a fine strike to ensure the points were heading back to Lancashire.
Burnley looked bright in the opening minutes at the Ricoh Arena, with Chris McCann seeing his header sail just over the crossbar from Wade Elliott’s teasing cross.
Martin Paterson then saw an effort from outside the area saved by Keiren Westwood shortly after, before the striker saw his goal-bound header denied again by the City keeper’ midway through the first-half.
Coventry looked to respond to the pressure posed from the Clarets, as Freddy Eastwood had his low drilled shot saved by Brian Jensen just past the half-hour mark, but the hosts were then awarded a spot-kick five minutes before the break.
Elliott Ward stepped-up from 12-yards out and fired home the opener, which saw Coventry head into half-time with a one goal lead.
The Clarets needed a response to going a goal down and that’s exactly what they got early in the second-half, when Duff rifled in from close range following Elliott’s corner to draw the scores level with just over an hour left to play in Coventry.
Isaac Osbourne and Joey Gudjonsson both had efforts saved by Jensen to keep the score at 1-1, with Burnley then turning to the bench and introducing Eagles and Blake, as the away side pushed for a winning goal.
As the game reached the final few minutes, the Clarets took the lead as Eagles fired in a delightful cross for Blake and the striker made no mistake from inside the area to slot home past Westwood.
Eagles then got his own name on the scoresheet two minutes later, as the forward cut inside from the left wing and picked out the top corner from 20-yards out to extend the lead to 3-1 and seal the points.
