An in-depth look back at a previous encounter between the Clarets & Rovers

05/03/2016 – Burnley 1 – 0 Blackburn Rovers (Turf Moor)

Burnley’s climbed back to the top of the Championship table after a 1-0 victory over Rovers at Turf Moor, as Andre Gray’s first-half goal proved to be the difference in the derby.

There was an early opportunity for the hosts when Rovers defender Grant Hanley looked to hook it away from danger, but Sam Vokes was there to intercept, with the ball eventually falling into the path of Gray, who could only fire over the target on the half-volley.

However, with 16 minutes on the clock the Clarets had their breakthrough, as referee Michael Jones pointed to the spot after Shane Duffy hacked the legs of George Boyd inside the area.

Gray stepped up to the penalty spot and fired home sending Jason Steele the wrong way to give the home side the lead.

Rovers pressed for an equaliser and came close when Elliott Bennett’s fierce strike from just inside the box was tipped away well by the hands of Tom Heaton.

There was another chance for the visitors when Hope Akpan’s effort squeezed through the Burnley defence only for Heaton to gather it.

The Clarets came close to a second in the second half when Fredrik Ulvestad’s effort fell into the path of Gray, who just couldn’t quite connect from close range.

Heaton was called into action once again with the clock ticking down, his time to deny Bennett grabbing an equaliser, before Michael Keane missed the opportunity to seal the win late on for the Clarets after heading wide from inside the box.
