Scott Parker’s pre-season in Portugal has offered a valuable learning experience for U21s Charlie Casper, Murray Campbell and Joe Bauress, who have travelled with the men’s first team squad for the warm weather training camp.
Reflecting on the experience, all three spoke positively about the opportunity to learn from the senior players and coaching staff.
Goalkeeper Charlie Casper said: “I’ve found it really enjoyable. It’s been a good chance to get away from the training ground and be in new surroundings. Obviously, it’s really good facilities here.
“We don't really spend a lot of time with the older lads around the training ground and outside of the club so, when you're here 24/7 with them you get to know them a little bit more and socialise after training at night. It's been good in that sense as well. When you get to know them better, you can train with them better, so it definitely helps.”
Midfielder Joe Bauress added: “I think it’s really good to be around the first team and to come away with them, it’s special. Being here we’ve seen the level. It’s been a good level of training all week, it’s been hard.
“They’ve all welcomed us in well. I trained with them a few times towards the end of last season, then at the start of this season we’ve been with them quite a lot. Coming away and spending more time with the group helps us to get up to their level in terms of athleticism.”
And how does Bauress find working with Head Coach Scott Parker?
“With him being a midfielder I’ve learnt a lot off him. His pre-season's are intense and that’s what you want as a young lad, to show that you can match the first team lads, try and get yourself to the front. It’s been a positive but challenging week for us.”
Centre-back Murray Campbell has enjoyed the chance to learn from the senior players including fellow defenders Joe Worrall and Maxime Estève.
“I’ve enjoyed it a lot, getting to know the players and them getting to know me a lot more, it’s been really good. It’s been nice having Charlie and Joe out here, but we’ve got to know everyone else too, we haven’t just stayed with each other.
“Getting to train with top players every day, it gets you used to the level and how quickly you need to do things, how sharp everyone is, all the gym work. It’s been good to learn from them.
“Jacko [Mike Jackson] helps with the defenders a lot, it’s been good to learn off him and take notes. Training next to Joe Worrall, Maxime, it’s been great to try and take in as much information as you can.
“It’s nice to get to know the coaching and support staff a lot more, it also helps having Tebbs [Jack Tebbutt First Team Player Care Lead] around. I’m really close to him, I see him outside of football as well, so it helped to have him around to ease yourself in.”
