Clarets head to Salford in Carabao Cup third round

Burnley continue their Carabao Cup campaign on Tuesday night (7:45pm) with a trip to Salford City in the third round.

Vincent Kompany’s side reached the quarter-finals of the competition last season after entering at the same stage before losing out to Manchester United in the quarter-final at Old Trafford.

The Clarets saw off Nottingham Forest in the previous round thanks to a stoppage time strike from Zeki Amdouni at the City Ground which booked Burnley’s place in the next round.

It will be the first time the Clarets have ever faced Salford City in a competitive fixture and a first visit to the Peninsula stadium.

Salford City

City are currently enjoying their fifth season in the Football League, after securing promotion from the National League back in 2019.

Despite not winning promotion out of League Two yet, under the ownership of the Manchester United’s ‘Class of 92’ which includes David Beckham, Gary Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, the Ammies lifted the Football League Trophy in 2020.

Former Claret Neil Wood, who played for the Clarets on loan in 2004, took charge of Salford in May 2022 after replacing Gary Bowyer.

City finished in the play-offs last season but suffered defeat to Stockport County across the two semi-final legs, resulting in a fifth season in League Two.

Form Guide

Burnley head into the cup clash off the back of a positive and battling performance with Manchester United at Turf Moor on Saturday despite suffering defeat.

The Clarets are yet to lose away from home, despite only playing twice on the road both times at Nottingham Forest, a 1-0 win in the second round of the competition was followed up by a 1-1 draw with Forest in the Premier League.

Salford currently sit 21st in the League Two table and have lost their last five matches in all competitions, with the last victory coming against Leeds United in the Carabao Cup second round.

The Ammies also defeated Championship side Preston North End in the first round of the competition and have two league wins this campaign over Forest Green and Tranmere Rovers.

What Vincent Kompany said

“There’s plenty of exciting players in our squad and we’re going to need everyone this season.

“The best way to get everyone to improve is to start them again in a match like this.

“It’s an exciting game for us and there’s a lot of players that we want to see in a Burnley shirt and we believe can make an impact on the squad this season.

“I’m looking forward to the game. It’s a good moment for us to go play this game."
