Club message regarding offensive chanting at Turf Moor

Ahead of our Boxing Day game, Burnley Football Club are aware of incidents of chanting in relation to football tragedies that have deeply impacted Liverpool Football Club and its supporters.

Those found to be responsible will be ejected from the stadium and maybe arrested. There is no place for tragedy chanting in our game.

Margaret Aspinall, former chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group has spoken out on the hurt tragedy chanting causes. Margaret’s son James was one of the 97 children, women and men who lost their lives as a result of the Hillsborough disaster on April 15, 1989. He was just 18 at the time.

She said: “Football brings so much joy to so many people all over the world but there is no need for people to be chanting in the way they do. The pain it causes is unbearable; we do not deserve to hear these chants. If you hear that chanting, go to a steward, report it as, through the proper authorities, you can change things. Anything that offends or hurts anybody is never acceptable.”

Burnley Football Club condemns all forms of tragedy chanting and we are committed to working with the relevant authorities, stakeholders and other clubs to eradicate it from our game.

As part of our continued push for respect at all football matches, we remind supporters that poverty chanting also affects people in our town, as well as visiting fans. It's not welcome at Turf Moor.

If you hear any offensive chanting at the stadium, please report it immediately via a steward, the CLARETS RESPECT line on 66777 or the Kick it Out dedicated app.
