Burnley Football Club are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Brian Nelson, Chair of Trustees of Burnley FC in the Community, former Director of Burnley Football Club, and a lifelong Clarets supporter.
Brian had a long affiliation with the Club. After serving as an Associate Director, he joined the Burnley FC Board of Directors in December 2013 and remained a Director until December 2020.
Alongside this work, Brian was passionate about the work of the charity. He joined the Burnley FC in the Community Board in 2014, later becoming Chair of Trustees. In this role he supported the charity’s considerable growth, helping champion its mission, and drive positive change across East Lancashire.
Chairman Alan Pace said: “Everyone at Burnley Football Club are saddened to hear of the passing of Brian Nelson and we pass on our sincere condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.
“When we arrived at Burnley, we recognised how deeply rooted Burnley FC in the Community was in the town, and this is testament to Brian’s dedication and commitment.
“He leaves behind a great legacy, not just for his impact through Burnley FC in the Community, but also for the person he was. He will be sorely missed by everyone at the Club."
Helen Gurman, CEO of Burnley FC in the Community, said: "Brian was a truly exceptional man whose impact on Burnley FC in the Community, Burnley Football Club and the wider community cannot be overstated. He was immensely proud of both organisations and cared deeply about the communities we serve.
"As Chair of Trustees, Brian provided outstanding leadership and support, always giving his time generously and putting others first. He was passionate about creating opportunities and ensuring our work made a lasting difference.
"What so many people will remember, however, is Brian's kindness. He brought warmth, humour and perspective to every conversation and had a wonderful ability to make people feel valued. We were incredibly fortunate to have his friendship, support and leadership, and he will be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him."
