Jay Bradford paid tribute to her squad, and the support shown to Burnley FC Women from all at the club, as they lifted the Lancashire FA Women’s Senior Cup following a thumping 9-0 victory in the final against Darwen FC Ladies.
The interim head coach, who has worked closely with the side for the vast majority of the campaign, adds a first trophy during her time at the club to an impressive personal silverware collection.
And having seen the side put in a dominant performance to lift a County Cup for the second season running, having last term won the LFA Women’s Challenge Cup, Bradford described the importance of being the first-ever holders of the newly-formed Senior Cup.
“We came into this competition wanting to win it, and we’ve done exactly that. Silverware is important for any club, and we’re obviously chasing the league, but winning this cup was a big ambition of ours, particularly mine when I took over.
“The fact we’ve done that, and done it convincingly, is really pleasing. I thought we were really good tonight.
“We wanted to go into the game and show why we were at the level we’re at, and I thought we did that. We’ve had a really busy scheduled, so to play in that manner and keep that intensity up for the 90 minutes, I couldn’t be more pleased with the group.”
Burnley were five to the good come the break in the final, with midfielder Millie Ravening netting a first half hat-trick and Sarah Greenhalgh striking a brace.
Striker Greenhalgh – who is in her second stint at the club having previously formed part of the squad which won back-to-back promotions to take Burnley into the third tier – then completed her own treble in the second half.
Bradford added, “Some of the individual moments, like Millie’s second goal, stand out. Buff [Greenhalgh] took all her goals well, and I thought in general we scored some really good team goals.
“That’s always important, and I always say that having different scorers is important, but so are the different types of goal that we can score. There was a few in there where we went from back to front, and we were patient in those moments to get our reward.”
And while praise for players was the order of the day, the former Coventry United boss wanted to thank those at the club who help to make the women’s side tick on a daily basis.
“This is us as a team giving back to the club in general for their support. Us being able to bring silverware in and put the club on the map [in the women’s game] is really important.
“For the players, you look at people like Buff who have been here a long time and she’s coming to the end of her career now so to have moments like tonight is really special.
“That filters right the way through the squad too because we’ve got younger players with us, and next year this will be a competition that we want to come and win again with them.”
Bradford and her side return to action in the league, where they currently sit 2nd, away at West Bromwich Albion this coming Sunday (16th April, 2pm KO). Being played at The Hawthorns, tickets can be bought via the Baggies.
