Burnley FC in the Community won Sport + Recreation Alliance’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Award last week, national recognition of their dedicated work towards supporting local children via their ‘Schools Mental Wellbeing’ project.
Lizzie O’Connor (Social Inclusion Manager), Emily Carter (Mental Wellbeing Worker), Brian Nelson (Chair of Trustees), Helen Gurman (Chief Operating Officer), Mike Colquhoun (Director of Community Projects), Regan Kelly (Senior Mental Wellbeing Worker) & Sharon Swindells (Safeguarding Manager) were all in attendance at the awards ceremony.
Confirmed as finalists in January, BFCitC pipped both Blackdog Outdoors & Scunthorpe RUFC to the award, picked up at Twickenham Stadium. It is intended to celebrate Clubs and programmes which use the power of sport & recreation to promote & enhance positive wellbeing.
Club Chairman Alan Pace said: “A big congratulations must go to Burnley FC in the Community.
“The ‘Schools Mental Wellbeing’ project is fantastic. It helps hundreds of young people in secondary schools across the region every season.

“Everybody at the football Club is incredibly proud of the charity for the award, and for the impact they continue to have on our local community.”
Launching in 2018, the project has provided support sessions for more than 3000 students struggling with their mental health.
Using the appeal of football and the passion in the local area for Burnley FC, BFCitC work with secondary schools across Burnley and Pendle to deliver the project.
To aid their delivery, a team of dedicated mental wellbeing workers help to raise awareness of mental health within the schools.
Education & coaching is available for parents, students and teachers alike with the aim of making school’s ‘mentally healthy’.
Receiving recognition prior to this, the project had been shortlisted for honours at both the North West Football Awards as well as the Children and Young People Now National Mental Health and Wellbeing Awards in 2020.
Now, having been successful finalists, BFCitC’s Chief Operating Officer Helen Gurman added, “I am very proud that we are the winners of this award for our Schools Mental Wellbeing project.
“We are so proud of our Mental Wellbeing team and the positive impact that they all have on the young people in our area.
“The award is a testament to the work that they put in on a daily basis.”
