Jordan Beyer believes the Manchester United game, under the Turf Moor lights on Saturday night, looks great on paper and should be an enjoyable event for those in attendance.
The defender has been reflecting on the challenging start to the campaign but is confident the team are continuing to improve every day.
“It was not an easy start I would say. We had three tough opponents, the first three matchdays were City, Villa and Tottenham. Three of the 6/7/8 top clubs I would say but I think even though the results were pretty harsh, we still weren’t far off it, it was only small things that were wrong. However, in this league the small things make a difference and if you play against teams like this they will just go and use everything they have, every mistake they will punish us for. That’s what basically happened the first three games, but I think the game against Nottingham gave us a confidence boost. We could see that we can compete at this level. Even though we are sad that we couldn’t take all of the three points, it was only a draw, but I still think it’s a first point, so we got a little bit of pressure off our chest now.
“Even though the results haven’t been there, we’re on a good path, we’re on a good way, and for me it’s just enjoying playing in the Premier League. It’s nothing I can take for granted so I try to do my best and I think from here on we’re only going to improve as a team, as a person, so we go from here.”
The scope for punishment and little room of error has been one of the biggest differences in the move from the Championship to the Premier League, and Beyer’s more than aware of the level of concentration required when competing in the top division.
“The details make such a big difference, so you could the Championship also, it’s just like the tempo of the whole game, the players are quicker and ahead. It’s like I said if you lose the ball in your own half its directly a dangerous situation. Whereas in the Championship it also might happen but a lot of times you might just get a cross or something. It gets punished very quick here. I think that’s the main difference, you can’t switch off for one second, otherwise somebody will run behind you, use your mistake and make something out of it.”
The defender, whilst disappointed not to pick up the three points at The City Ground on Monday, was pleased with the strong signs the Clarets showed on the night.
“It’s tough to say. I think it was obviously a different opponent because they weren’t pressing us maybe as high as the other teams did. We knew from the beginning we were going to have more possession than the other games, but we just tried to be as compact as possible, tried to defend. Also, when we have to just throw our bodies in the way. We tried to stay in the game as long as possible and I think we had a few 15, maybe 20 minutes at the beginning that were a bit shaky. Everybody was a bit nervous but also, we stood our man against them and then everybody went up in confidence a little, we were clean on the ball and working to our strengths. I think you could see that we could be very, very dangerous on our possession and also, we went in front so there were a lot of positive things to take from it. Although we were disappointed at the end to get the disallowed goal and not win the game, but we’ve gone on from then.”
Saturday, Beyer believes is set to be a great event.
“It sounds good on paper to me! I’m really looking forward to the game, it’s just like the games you dream of as a small kid, as a kid growing up, playing against these clubs.
“For us it’s a great event but at the end of the day it’s a game like everything else. There’s nothing to be scared of. We just go out there and try to do our best and enjoy the time on the field because you never know how many more times you’re going to play them. So, we try to do our best and put everything in that game and see where it goes from there.”
