Burnley Football Club would like to pay a lasting heartfelt tribute, to former Burnley player, Andy Wharton, who sadly passed away at the age of just 63.
Locally born in Whitewell Bottom, Wharton’s aspiration was always to play for the Clarets, a team he had supported since his schoolboy days. In the late 1970s he joined Burnley as an apprentice and in December 1979 he signed a professional contract with the club.
He made his first-team debut for the club against Scarborough in a FA Cup tie in November 1980. The following week he made his first of 65 league appearances for the Clarets.
Wharton was a tough tackling defender and his desire to win was unquestionable. He formed a defensive partnership with Martin Dobson, Brian Laws, Mike Phelan and Vince Overson during the Clarets 1981/82 Third Division championship-winning season.
The following season he made a handful of appearances after the signing of the experienced Willie Donachie. The arrival of John Bond saw Wharton moving out on loan to Torquay United prior to signing for Chester City in February 1984.
He was released by Chester the following year and later had spells with several local non-league clubs, which included Colne Dynamoes, Rossendale United and Bacup Borough.
