Earlier this month, Burnley Football Club and Burnley FC in the Community (BFCitC) continued their Academy in the Community programme by integrating players into various charity initiatives.
The visits began with four first-year scholars, Michael Stanley, Corey King, Braidin Derbyshire and Brandon Pouani, who visited BFCitC’s Bertie Bees programme, which gives youngsters their first steps into football.
Reflecting on the session, Derbyshire said: “Michael and I took the younger group of four- and five-year-olds and it was definitely out of my comfort zone!
“It was good, though, and is something I want to do more of as I got to see the game from a different perspective of being a coach. Having a plan B is always good too, and coaching is something I’d be interested in.”
Connor Edwards. Joe Wilcock, Kian McMahon-Brown, and George Brierley also attended BFCitC’s Player Development Centre.
This programme offers young and ambitious players aged between nine and 16 the chance to train weekly, coaching with UEFA licenced coaches at venues situated in key areas around Burnley.
Following the visit, Brierley said: “I enjoyed working with the U8s, who were mostly working on technical, on the ball stuff and learning new skills.
“I was there to pass on some knowledge and it was a good experience – the kids were fun, energetic, and looked like they loved being there. I learnt how much they value Burnley, and just how much the Club means to its community.”
Finally, the Academy’s U12s players attended the Sky Bet Championship fixture against Swansea City to assist the charity’s Veterans department and the Royal British Legion in fundraising.
Their support was hugely appreciated, and all money raised will go towards supporting serving and ex-serving personnel and their families.
BFCitC Director of Sport and Education, Chris Andrews explained why the visits were a great success.
“We are so pleased to see this partnership continue to create impactful memories for both the scholars and the charity’s participants,” he said.
“The programme has been shortlisted for a Northwest Football Award too, and we’re incredibly proud of that, the programme, and the impact it’s making.”
