A warm welcome to today’s game against Liverpool.
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and we’re grateful that you can join us for some evening football at Turf Moor.
At the time of writing these notes, due to the printing schedule over the festive period, we are yet to travel to Fulham this coming weekend. However, we are looking forward to getting on the road again and hope to put in a positive performance at Craven Cottage.
I was extremely disappointed with the issues that occurred during our home game against Everton as a result of away supporters being in some home sections, and I want to stress that we take incidents such as this incredibly seriously.
As a club we have launched an internal enquiry and I want to assure you all that the safety of supporters at Turf Moor is our top priority and we are working hard to ensure that the unacceptable scenes on the day will not happen again.
A positive that came from the match was the welcome return of Lyle Foster. I was moved by the reception he received; it shows just how much his Burnley family are behind him. His involvement highlighted how far he has come, and we will continue to support him every step of the way.
In the lead up to Christmas Day, our players and staff were out in the community and made visits to Burnley and Blackburn Hospital’s children’s wards, Pendleside Hospice, Burnley FC in the Community’s Dementia Café and two local schools, Casterton Primary and Coal Clough Academy.
It’s important for our players to engage with the local community, our club is in the heart of the town, and we want to make sure, especially our new players, understand the connection and the responsibility we have. A big thank you to all the places that we visited for accommodating us!
Ahead of today’s game I want to reiterate our recent messaging around tragedy chanting. As a club we’ve been in dialogue with Liverpool Football Club, who have experienced the hurt and distress tragedy chanting can cause.
Whilst we recognise this behaviour is not representative of the vast majority of fans, all forms of tragedy chanting have no place in our game. Those found to be responsible will be ejected from the stadium and their actions can lead to arrest.
If you see or hear any antisocial or discriminatory behaviour at Turf Moor, please text CLARETS RESPECT and a message to 66777 so we can investigate.
Finally, as we approach the new year, I look back on the year gone by.
I’m sure you will agree as a football club we’ve experienced highs and lows. I am, however, confident that both in time and together, we will achieve many more highs. One thing remains a constant though, your support is invaluable in helping us tackle whatever challenge is thrown our way.
Happy New Year Clarets, I wish you all a happy and healthy 2024.
UTC!
Alan
