A statistical look at young Clarets’ campaign

Burnley U21s enjoyed a season to remember in 2024/25, with the team progressing well on all fronts.

In addition to finishing 2nd in the Professional Development League northern section and competing in the national play-offs, Andy Farrell’s side reached the semi-finals of the Premier League Cup.

The young Clarets played 47 matches in total, with the Central League Cup and Lancashire FA Senior Cup also on the agenda.

31 of those fixtures ended in victory, giving Farrell an overall win percentage of just under 66.

Our young players found the back of the net 126 times, averaging not far off three goals per game (2.69).

December’s home league match against Birmingham City produced the biggest winning margin of the campaign, with Burnley winning 8-1.

Joe Westley produced a four-goal haul on a cold night at the County Ground in Leyland, with Tommy McDermott netting a brace alongside further strikes from Joao Mendes and Charlie Veevers.

The team scored five or more goals in a single match an impressive nine times, managing six against both Queens Park Rangers and Coventry City.

Having moved to Lancashire from Arsenal last summer, striker Kamarni Ryan topped the scoring charts with 19 goals in his 42 appearances.

Westley followed closely with 17, while McDermott, Tom Tweedy and Joe Bauress were the other three players to hit double figures with 15, 12 and 10 respectively.

There were just nine matches in which the team failed to score.

At the other end of the pitch Farrell’s side conceded 53 goals in all competitions, with 38 of those coming in the league.

That total makes Burnley’s defence the second best in the North section behind Sheffield United, who conceded just two goals less.

Having scored 89 league goals, the Clarets finished with a goal difference of 51.

We kept 16 clean sheets in all competitions thanks to the efforts of six different goalkeepers, and it was Jon Ander Vilar Robinson who led the way with seven.

Lewis Forshaw recorded three shutouts, with Etienne Green and Connor Edwards both managing two and Charlie Casper and Sam Waller keeping one each.

Our longest winning streak came between the start of October and the middle of November, when a run of nine straight victories started with a 4-1 triumph at Luton Town and ended with a 3-1 victory at Blackburn Rovers.

Those matches came amid a real purple patch, with Farrell’s players winning 13 from 15 in all competitions.

Overall, 59 different players featured in 2024/25, with some as young as 16 in Kian McMahon-Brown and Troy Savage.

After a couple of injury-hit seasons it was great to see Bauress, who took on captain’s responsibilities in the second half of the campaign, top the appearance charts with 44.

Ryan was second best on that front with 42, followed by Joe Ashton on 40, Brandon Ly on 39 and Hamzat Balogun on 38.

Several players featured just once, including Assistant Manager Jack Cork who came on as an 83rd minute substitute in our 5-0 Good Friday victory at Crewe Alexandra!
