Clarets boss reflects on victory over Brentford

Manager Vincent Kompany his side have earnt the right to enjoy tonight's celebrations after running out deserved 2-1 winners against Brentford at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon but insists his team will put it behind them tomorrow.

Burnley took an early lead through Jacob Bruun Larsen's penalty when Vitinho was fouled by Sergio Reguilon, who shown a straight red card for the foul, before David Fofana doubled the hosts' lead in the second half. Defender Kristoffer Ajer pulled a goal back for the Bees late on but the Clarets' defence stood strong to keep the visitors at bay.

Speaking post-match, Kompany highlighted how 'great' it felt to take all three points against the Bees but the importance of returning to hard work in a few days time.

The Clarets boss said: “It feels great. You ask how good does it feel, I think we have to celebrate. It’s a day where we won, we got the three points and I think the way we handled this means we will really enjoy this day. Then tomorrow we go back to work.”

“I think it’s important (to enjoy the moment) because I did say to the players so many times we’ve come back to the dressing room and we’ve had to say all the right things, do all the right things to keep that energy and to give ourselves a chance in the next game.

“So many times we’ve actually played well and had disappointing results where we’ve conceded in the last minute, like we did against West Ham.

“To bring that energy throughout the week to start like we did, I think at the end you earn the right to celebrate when you win. It’s not going to be win, rest, work, it’s going to be work win and then work tomorrow.”

On the impressive performance from his team, Kompany added: “That’s what the team did, they started hard from the beginning. We were on the front foot, we created situations that forced mistakes from the opponents, we won duels, we were aggressive.

“Then after that, for large spells, we did exactly what you have to do against 10 men. We scored the second goal.

“There are a couple of goals where I still don’t know how we missed it, but okay and then after that it’s just a team where you’ve not been winning, sometimes it becomes a bit more difficult at the end of games to keep the result.

"But we did exactly what we needed to do in terms of showing grit at times and it’s not like we conceded massive chances. We just had the opportunity to put the game to bed earlier.”

Despite recent results not going Burnley's way, Kompany admits the belief has never been lost within his squad and praised the 'desire' the Clarets showed today, particularly for the second goal.

“There’s never been a lack of belief. That’s never been the case. “For us we have total belief, full belief. I just want to see, and it’s a bigger picture idea, but I just want to see players always alive. Players being alive.

“The goal we scored, the second one, it’s everything about our season. We actually lose the ball when we shouldn’t lose the ball but then we make a 60 or 70-yard recovery run, recover the ball and opposed to just saying ‘oh okay, we’ve recovered the ball’, we then go and attack the other side.

“What I mean by that is that it’s not perfect, but the desire is there. You can always achieve something with that.”

The March international break will now see several Clarets head off around the globe for the next week to compete in international fixtures but Kompany believes it hasn't come at a bad time to 'reset'.

Kompany said: “No, it’s a good time, it’s fine, It’s absolutely fine. We’ve got plans anyway for the international break. For us it’s a way to reset ourselves for the final run, so it’s not a bad way to reset.”
