New signing Connor Roberts aims to make Clarets proud

Connor Roberts has pledged to give everything for the cause as he looks forward to a second crack at the Premier League with the Clarets.

Roberts has signed for Burnley on a four-year deal from Swansea City to become the Clarets’ fifth senior summer signing ahead of Tuesday night’s transfer deadline.

The right-back played a handful of top-flight games for the Swans prior to their relegation in 2018.

And having just missed out on a return last season by helping Swansea reach the Championship play-off final, the Wales international, 25, is ready to embrace another opportunity with Sean Dyche’s squad.

“I was privileged enough to play a handful of games for Swansea in the Premier League,” said Roberts, who has been capped 30 times by his country.

“We got relegated that year, which was heart-breaking for myself as a Swansea lad, but this is a different type of challenge for me now coming here.

“You've got players who have played many years in the Premier League, brilliant players, and it's going to be a challenge to firstly hopefully try and get in the team and play as many games as I can and I'm willing to do that.”

Bar loan spells at Yeovil Town, Bristol Rovers and Middlesbrough, Roberts has spent all his career to date at Swansea.

But after 152 appearances for the Liberty Stadium club, having joined Swansea as a 10-year-old, the Neath-born defender is looking forward to pulling on a Burnley shirt and helping the Clarets continue their Premier League journey.

He told Clarets Plus: “I’ve had amazing memories and will always love that club.

“Thank-you to them, but I’m here now and it’s a new challenge and something I really want to make positive and the only way I can do that is by playing well and giving absolutely everything when I get called upon.

“Since I was a boy, I have always tried to rise to every challenge that gets put in front of me and this is another one.”

Roberts – who is close to a full recovery from the groin injury he sustained after helping Wales reach the last 16 of this summer’s Euro 2020 finals – added: “Whenever you go to a new team, or play for a new team, you want to get out for that first game and put on the shirt and actually play football.

"And I can assure you every time I do I will give absolutely everything.

“I won't be the best player on the pitch, but I’ll probably run more than anyone and give absolutely everything and hopefully I can be someone the Burnley fans are proud to have play for their team. That’s the plan.

“I am a player who can offer something. Ever since I was a boy, I’ve told myself that you might not be the best player, but if you run more than anyone and give more than anyone then you’ll have half a chance.

“No matter what level you play at that still stands and that’s what I’ll be trying to do.”
