Goals in each half from Mitch George and Joe McGlynn were enough to ensure af irst victory of the season on a scorching afternoon at the Clarets' base.

It was a young Clarets side as four second-year scholars, including Harry Allen, Udoka Chima, Jayden Major and Rhys Fenlon, left the club on loan this week to gain experience in competitive mens football.

This opened the door for a first start for goalkeeper Lewis Thomas and defender Jake Rooney.

The home side started brightly and opened the scoring just seven minutes into the game, as George glanced home a header from Ben Woods' corner.

And the Clarets were on the front foot and could have doubled their advanatge shortly after, as McGlynn slotted home what looked to be the second of the afternoon, only to be flagged for offside in the build-up.

However, City equalised moments later, as a deflected strike found the back of the net.

Burnley came out raring to go in the second-half and took their deserved lead just after the hour mark.

McGlynn, who scored a hat-trick on Tuesday in the Clarets Cup comeptition, slotted home his first of the season in the U18 Professional Development League, to give Philliskirk's side the advantage once again.

The Bluebirds again pushed for an equaliser, although the Clarets nearly had a third towards the end of the game, as Conn-Clarke tried his luck from range with a fierce strike, which rattled off the post before being cleared from danger.

And despite the visitors' best efforts at clawing themselves back into the match, the young Burnley side held on to secure their first win of the campaign.

Philliskirk's side are next in action next weekend at Crystal Palace ( Saturday, 31st August, 11:00am KO)
