England U21 winger gives Clarets major boost

McNEIL | Clarets Star Extends Stay At Turf

Dwight McNeil has signed a new long-term contract to commit himself to Turf Moor.

In a major boost for the Clarets, McNeil has extended his existing contract by a further 12 months after agreeing a deal until June, 2024 with the option of a further year.

The 20-year-old winger follows team-mate Ashley Westwood in signing a new deal at Burnley since the start of the 2020/21 season after club captain Ben Mee extended his contract by a further 12 months in the summer.

“I’m delighted to sign a new contract. I love playing for the club and it’s a club I want to be at,” said McNeil – who has started every Premier League game bar one for the Clarets since the end of 2018.

“It’s a great position to be in and I couldn’t have asked for more help from the lads, to be honest.

“My focus was always to be a Burnley player and carry on doing what I’m doing because I love the club, I love the team and playing for the gaffer and that’s what I want to carry on doing.”

England Under-21 international McNeil signed a first professional contract at Turf Moor only two-and-a-half years ago after joining the Clarets’ youth set-up in 2014.

His senior debut came at the end of the 2017/18 season with a first start against Olympiakos in a Europa League tie in August, 2018.

He then made a first Premier League start against Manchester United – where he started his career as a schoolboy – before a goalscoring performance against West Ham in the final game of 2018 kick-started his remarkable run of first-team games.

“Going back to that West Ham game, the gaffer and the lads put their belief in me and I have been in the team ever since,” added the wideman, who played a key role in the Clarets’ revival in 2018/19 and last season’s top-10 Premier League finish.

“I’m so happy and fortunate to have been in the team but I think I’ve also showed what I’m capable of doing and I just want to keep doing that.

“I feel like I’ve become more experienced and understand myself more as a person on and off the pitch and that’s been important.

“I just want to do the same as last year now and continue to be part of the team throughout the year. I just want to play football.”
