Clarets chief praises performance as Clarets bow out Carabao Cup

Manager Vincent Kompany came away disappointed with the result but very proud of his team's performance against Premier League side Manchester United on Wednesday night.

The Clarets suffered a 2-0 defeat to United at Old Trafford, thanks to Marcus Rashford and Christian Eriksen goals but Kompany had nothing but praise for his team's effort against classy opposition.

Post-match, Kompany hailed the Clarets' work rate and the moments of quality from Erik Ten Hag's side to take the victory.

The Burnley boss said: "It was a good, honest and brave performance that was full of energy, I didn't want us to roll over because we came to Old Trafford, but it was a tough game of course.

"I thought we went in for every challenge, every tackle, every second ball and I don't think we ever allowed the game to be comfortable for them.

"They're a good team, well coached with plenty of quality throughout and a couple of moments of quality proves to be the difference.

"I thought we rose to the challenge well and there is a lot we cant take from this game into the next one, we can't be too hurt from this.

"For us, it was a moment where we needed to get something out of the game and if it couldn't be the result then it could be the performance and there are some positives to take with us.

"We did have chances to go on and score and get back into the game, however tonight it's Man United's night but for us it's a good performance and I'll take that."

The Clarets were backed by over 7,000 supporters at Old Trafford, making plenty of noise throughout the tie and sticking behind the side.

And Kompany gave them a special mention: "They were terrific tonight again, they didn't stop singing throughout the whole night and came out in their numbers.

"Over 7,000 of them were here tonight and they made it heard, we will need them again next week when we're back at Turf Moor.

"It never goes unnoticed and we appreciate it every week, home and away, it's amazing."
