Burnley U18s will take on their Bristol City counterparts in the FA Youth Cup fifth round on Wednesday 7th February, with a quarter-final place at stake.
It’s a marker of progression for the young Clarets, who exited the competition at the fourth-round stage last year to eventual winners West Ham United.
Led by Manager Tony Philliskirk, Burnley started their 2023/24 campaign with a third-round tie at home to Birmingham City on Monday 18 December.
The team won a penalty shootout 4-2 after drawing one all at the end of the 90, and extra time finishing 2-2 in front of a crowd of 226 at the County Ground in Leyland.
Zach Johnson struck in the first half before Jack Rogers scored with almost the last kick in extra-time to force a shootout.
That saw goalkeeper Lewis Forshaw save three spot-kicks, giving Olly Pimlott the opportunity to score the winner and spark celebrations.
Burnley were then on the road in the fourth round, travelling south to take on Queens Park Rangers at MATRADE Loftus Road on Monday 22nd January.
Playing in front of a larger crowd of 916 in a stadium environment did not seem to faze the team, as they ran out 2-0 winners with a goal either side of half-time.
Rohan Vaughan struck from the edge of the penalty area in first-half added time before a corner fell kindly for defender Murray Campbell to finish from close range.
Speaking after the match in London, Philliskirk said: “At half-time I said to the lads that I was really pleased we were 1-0 up, but I didn’t think we played anywhere near the levels we’ve achieved this season.
“In cup competitions the most important thing, however, is winning and we’re through to the last 16 now. It was a fantastic effort from the lads and I thought there were some really good performances defensively. Lewis (Forshaw) made a couple of great saves to keep it at 2-0, too.
“Overall I’m delighted to be through.”
