Top scorer George made it six for the season as the Clarets saw off a determined challenge from the Latics.

Oldham are now under the care of ex-Clarets’ youth team boss Danny Cadamarteri, who wasn’t at the game at Barnfield.

And in the battle of the exes, it was former Oldham youth boss Tony Philliskirk who came out on top.

“I know a lot of the lads there and credit to Oldham. They made it difficult for us,” said Philliskirk.

“It was a different type of challenge and we didn’t play as well as we did at Wigan at the weekend.

“To win 4-1 probably wasn’t a fair reflection but it was good to get the result and go through.

"We started well and then the second goal probably changed it again and it was nice for Mitch to get his hat-trick at the end.

“We’ve used a lot of young players recently and we’ve been on a good little run.

“The lads have worked very hard and they’ve deserved it.”

Philliskirk’s side has now won four of their last five games in all competitions and saw off the Latics with three second-half goals.

The visitors cancelled out George’s early strike following a bright start from Burnley, which also saw Jayden Major and Ben Woods hit the woodwork.

Oldham were also twice denied by the post but once George tapped in to make it 2-1, the tide turned back the Clarets way in horrendous condtitions with late goals from Rhys Fenlon and George, who wrapped up his hat-trick to guarantee Burnley’s passage through to the last eight.

New first-year scholar Sam Unwin again figured from the bench following the midfielder’s recent arrival from Bury, along with 16-year-old schoolboy Jo Smyth-Ferguson.
