Late penalty denies dominant Burnley all three points in Premier League Cup opener

6 October 2019

An 87th minute penalty denied Burnley all three points, in the opening Group G fixture of the Premier League Cup, at Bishop Auckland’s Heritage Park.

Scott Wilson opened the scoring for Steve Ston'e side in the 11th minute from a corner, but Ben Liddle fired home from the spot with three minutes to go to ensure the honours were even on a wet afternoon in the North East.

After a fairly quiet opening 10 minutes, Burnley took the lead through defender Wilson, as the centre-back got on the end of Josh Benson’s corner to turn in the opener.

Moments later, the visitors could have had a second, as Rob Harker’s close-range effort was accidently blocked by debutant Joel Mumbongo, just a few yards in front of goal.

Stone’s side were dominating and had another chance to double the lead with 27 minutes gone, as Adam Phillips fired a free kick just over the bar.

Boro then had their first real opportunity of the game, as winger Sam Forlain saw his close-range strike cleared off the line by Ali Koiki, after picking up the rebound of Stephen Walker’s strike which rattled the post.

And despite the hosts searching for an equaliser before the break, Burnley headed into half-time with the lead.

Burnley started the second half the brighter, with Lewis Richardson teeing up Harker just outside the box, before the striker curled the ball over the bar.

Minutes later, Ryan Cooney came close as the right-back saw his fierce effort fizz just wide of the post.

The Clarets were keeping their hosts at arms' length, but there was a warning sign with 10 minutes remaining as Walker rattled the crossbar with a strike from outside the box.

And just as it looked as if the Clarets were going to hold on for all three points, Boro were awarded a penalty and captain Liddle stepped up and slotted in the equaliser.
