Tarky: It's An Awesome Foursome

Centre-back pairing with Ben Mee keeps delivering as Clarets hit top gear

7 October 2019

James Tarkowski is revelling in his defensive partnership with Ben Mee as the two continue to provide a bedrock for the Clarets’ climb up the table.

The duo played a key role as Burnley made it back-to-back home victories with Saturday’s 1-0 win over Everton.

The centre-back pairing shared in a third clean sheet in four Premier League games at Turf Moor this season as goalkeeper Nick Pope completed another shut-out.

And while neither Tarkowski or the uncapped Ben Mee have joined Pope on England duty this week, their contribution for the Clarets is beyond debate.

“It’s our third season playing together now so we know each other’s game inside out and we really enjoy playing with each other,” said Tarkowski.

“And with Popey in there as well; I thought Popey was brilliant – every time it was coming into the box, he was coming to claim it which makes our job so much easier.

“I thought the team defended well as a unit all day, which is really pleasing, and it was nice to get the clean sheet. As a back four it was really good.”

With Jeff Hendrick plundering the second-half winner with his second goal in four games, the Clarets took their points’ tally to 12 – the same total it took them more than half a season to reach in 2018/19.

Sean Dyche’s side sits seventh in the table, two points behind Leicester City who they face in their first game back after the international break.

And Tarkowksi is delighted with the Clarets’ current unbeaten run which stretches back to a 3-0 loss to Liverpool at the end of August.

“It would have been easy to lose on Saturday and still say ‘we’ve had an all right little block of games,’” he told Clarets Player HD.

“To get that win and get the eight points from the four games is really nice and puts us in good stead going into the next block after the international games.

“I know Everton have had a tough run, but they are still a very good side. So, to get the win was nice and it’s been a good four weeks.

“Two good draws away from home – when it’s always difficult - and two wins at home and a good performance on Saturday. It’s been a good four weeks for us.”
