McNeil Gets England Call

Clarets teenager selected for U20s' squad

14 March 2019

Winger Dwight McNeil has earned his first call-up to the England Under-20 squad after lighting up the Premier League.

The Clarets' teenager - who has started Burnley's last 11 top-flight games - trained with the squad last October as a stand-by player.

And he has now been officially selected for the first time for up-coming games against Poland and Portugal.

McNeil has been an instumental part of Sean Dyche's side since the turn of the year, notching a goal against West Ham at Turf Moor and four assists in the Premier League.

Paul Simpson's England side will face Poland at St.George's Park on Thursday 21 March, before facing Portugal in Penafiel on Tuesday 26 March.

McNeil, who joined Burnley’s Academy in 2014 after leaving Manchester United, made his first-team debut as a late substitute against Bournemouth on the final day of last season after signing his first professional contract at Turf Moor.

The 19-year-old then signed a new long-term contract in January 2019 on the back of an outstanding break-through season at first-team level.
