Dwight McNeil looks ‘hungry’ to replicate his success of last season as he prepares for a return to the Premier League stage.
Teenager McNeil emerged as a key man in the second half of the 2018/19 campaign as he played a leading role in the Clarets’ successful fight to retain their top-flight status.
And the winger has picked up where he left off with a superb strike in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Wigan capping an impressive pre-season programme.
“I’m really enjoying his performances,” said manager Sean Dyche.
“He’s worked superbly in pre-season. I spoke to him the other day about seeing the picture quickly and he’s doing that.
“The top players see the picture before everyone else and he’s maturing with that.
“He’s also working on transition quicker to get back into shape to go and press.
“They’re things that make you a more complete player and he’s showing really good signs.
“He should be pleased. He’s having a good pre-season so far. He’s fit and he’s well and he looks hungry.”
McNeil shared the goals at Wigan with Jay Rodriguez as the Clarets drew 2-2 with the Championship side.
Rodriguez scored his first goal in public since re-joining the Clarets earlier this month when he struck early at the DW Stadium.
And the striker is now ready to make his Turf Moor return when Dyche’s men face Nice on Tuesday night in the first leg of the European double-header which precedes their Premier League opener against Southampton on 10 August.
“It’s always a different challenge with a different style of play and we have to learn and adapt to get what we need out of the games. We’re looking forward to it,” said Rodriguez.
