Danny Drinkwater scored his first goal in a Burnley shirt as the Clarets beat an AFC Fylde side 3-0 in a Barnfield bounce-game.
Drinkwater claimed the second of three goals scored by the Clarets in a dominant second-half performance.
But, more importantly, the deadline-day signing was one of a number of senior players to complete the full game.
Drinkwater appeared for 45 minutes as an over-age player in the U23s’ 1-1 Professional Development League draw with Coventry City at Turf Moor on Monday.
And the on-loan midfielder stepped up on that to further build up his match fitness alongside Jeff Hendrick in the middle of the park.
Hendrick scored the Clarets’ opening goal, slotting the ball home after being teed up by 16-year-old Lewis Richardson, who played the second half.
Drinkwater then got himself on the scoresheet with a left-foot effort deflected in from 22 yards following a corner.
And the win was completed when Jay Rodriguez converted a late penalty after Aaron Lennon had been tripped in the box.
National League outfit Fylde made it a competitive run-out – particularly before the break – although goalkeeper Joe Hart was never seriously tested in keeping a clean sheet behind an experienced back four.
“Some of the lads needed extra minutes in a game situation and this was an ideal way to do it,” said boss Sean Dyche.
