PREVIEW: Charlton U23s v Burnley U23s

Clarets look to sign off with a win to keep play-off hopes alive

16 April 2019

The U23s go to Charlton Athletic this afternoon with a possible top-two finish still in their sights.

Birmingham City’s 2-1 defeat at Bristol City on Monday night has left the door open for the Clarets to claim a play-off finish in the Professional Development League’s northern section.

Birmingham and Burnley are now level on points with one game to go, with the Clarets facing Charlton at The Valley today (Tuesday, KO 1pm) and the Blues ending their programme at Hull City on Friday.

Birmingham’s superior goal difference, by four goals, means the Clarets probably still need the Blues to drop points.

But a win for Steve Stone’s side in south-east London would take them into second place – ending Crewe’s hopes of holding onto that spot – and keep the pressure on the Midlanders in the final week of the regular campaign.

Charlton are currently sixth in the southern division and unbeaten in their three previous matches.

Ipswich have topped the southern table to join northern group leaders Leeds in the title play-offs, with Crystal Palace needing a big win in their final game against Watford to pip Coventry City for second place.
