PREVIEW: Burnley U23s v Colchester Utd U23s

Clarets look to end home programme on a high to push Blues for second spot

8 April 2019

The Under-23s complete their home league programme against Colchester United this afternoon (Monday) in a behind-closed-doors fixture at Barnfield (KO 2pm).

Steve Stone’s side is looking to bounce back from a run of three successive defeats in league and cup after losing 2-1 at Nottingham Forest last Friday afternoon.

Birmingham City’s 3-1 win over Cardiff City on Saturday has taken them three points clear of the Clarets in second place in the Professional Development League’s northern section as they look to follow winners Leeds into the play-offs.

With two games to go, one more win is likely to be enough for the Blues to guarantee second spot.

But Burnley will look to push them all the way with maximum points in their final two games against the U’s and then at Charlton Athletic next Monday as they look to finish an impressive campaign on a high.

And Stone’s side will also be looking to regain their momentum ahead of the final of the LFA Senior Cup against Blackburn Rovers on a date still to be confirmed.

Stone said: "The lads have put a real effort in since i got here, but just looked a little off it against Forest in what we are trying to do.

"They now need to take up the baton and drive over the line which i have asked them to do.

"Now it's time to see if they can deliver it and finish the season on a high."

Colchester are currently propping up the league’s southern section, with six wins.
