A hat-trick by Evie Priestley sealed an emphatic league title win for Burnley FC Women and promotion into the FA Women’s National League North, the third tier of women’s football.
Jubilant celebrations saw the champagne corks popping following a 3-0 victory over Crewe Alexandra, and the remarkable achievement of back-to-back promotions.
Watch the goals that sealed promotion, above!
The town of Burnley now have a women’s team to be proud of - and one that hopefully will go on and achieve more in the women’s pyramid, with the backing of Burnley FC in the Community.
The first Clarets goal to seal promotion was not long in arriving as, on 10 minutes, Leah Embley charged down the right wing before passing to Priestley, who was well positioned in front of goal to calmly slot out of reach of the keeper.
The game swung further in the Clarets favour with a second goal six minutes later. Sarah Greenhalgh, on the right wing, saw her shot saved, but Priestley swooped to double the lead.
Early in the second half, Crewe made the Clarets sweat by reducing the arrears through a penalty.
However, the Clarets, knowing a point was enough to secure promotion, again picked up momentum and Priestley sparked wild celebrations as she broke the offside trap to head home.
Congratulations to Manager Matt Bee, Captain Jo Holt and all the Burnley FC Women on their fantastic rise through the ranks.
Burnley FC Women take a well-earned break over Easter, but return to action against Newcastle United Women FC on Sunday 28th April at Padiham FC’s Ruby Civil Arena. Kick-off is 3pm.
