Burnley U23s 1 Millwall U23s 2

10 September 2018

The Development Squad suffered last-gasp heartbreak as they fell to a first home defeat of the season to Millwall.

The Lions snatched a 90th minute winner after Clarets striker Tinashe Chakwana’s first half header had cancelled out Lewis White’s early strike for the visitors.

And after the game looked to be petering out into a draw, second-half substitute George Alexander slammed home the winner in the final moments.

The visitors started brightly and took the lead with just three minutes played, as Isaac Olaofe found White, who turned in the area and rifled the ball home from close range.

Burnley looked to reply shortly after and Dan Agyei saw his curling effort denied by Ryan Sandford in the Millwall goal, before Anthony Glennon’s strike was blocked by Jesse Debrah inside the box.

However, the Clarets did get their equaliser moments later.

Olatunde Bayode’s free-kick picked out Agyei, and when Sandford reacted brilliantly to parry his firm header upwards, Chakwana reacted quickest to head home from a couple of yards out.

Minutes later, the hosts came close to adding a second, as Ali Koiki burst forward down the left, before crossing just beyond for Chakwana in the box.

The first chance of the second half fell to Millwall with just over an hour played, as Debrah’s towering header sailed just wide of the post.

And the Lions again came close to regaining the lead, as White’s drilled effort from inside the area was palmed away by Bruce and out for a corner.

The Clarets then had their best chance of the half, as Chakwana and Younger both had attempts at slotting the ball home from close range following a corner.

However, it was Millwall who snatched victory in the dying stages as the ball dropped invitingly in the area to Alexander, who stabbed the ball home.
