Youths Back To Winning Ways

19 March 2018

The young Clarets ended a run of seven games without victory by bouncing back to winning ways at Coventry City.

A goal in each half was enough for the visitors to take all three points, as Marley Blair (below) put the Clarets ahead in the 29th minute, before Craig Ellison doubled their lead 10 minutes into the second half.

Burnley started the game brightly, despite horrific conditions of wind and rain, and Ellison put an effort just wide from a Jordan Barnett cross early on.

Shortly after there was a penalty shout when Ellison was tripped in the area, but despite appeals the officials were unmoved.

However, Blair soon opened the scoring, turning in Barnett’s cross at the back post.

And despite City’s best efforts at countering, it was the Clarets who doubled the lead just before the hour mark when Ellison, pictured below, coolly slotted home from close range to seal a first win since January,

Assistant coach John Townson, leading the side with Danny Cadermarteri observing the U16s, who also played Coventry City, said: “We applied ourselves very well and showed a good mentality in the conditions.

“Despite playing some excellent football, and creating a lot of chances ,the most pleasing thing was the clean sheet and the concentration for 90-plus minutes".

BURNLEY: Stone, Cropper, King, Moss, Mpofu, Layton, Kershaw, Yari, Blair, Barnett, Ellison.

Subs; Bruce, Mupariwa, Meredith, Jumeau, Harris.
