Charlie Austin Enters the Clarets Hall of Fame
Charlie Austin has revealed his pride after going into the record books with the most prolific goalscoring spell in club history.
The red-hot striker equalled Ray Pointer’s record of scoring in eight successive games with a brace in Tuesday’s dramatic 4-3 victory at Bristol City.
Club legend Pointer amassed 12 goals in that goal-den spell during the 1958/59 to set the bar high.
Austin’s deadly double took his tally to 14 in an identical sequence of games, effectively trumping Pointer’s record (see both records, set out below)
And the former Swindon Town striker admitted is was a privilege to be in such exalted company.
He said: “It felt very special once I slid in that first goal to equal the record.
“I couldn’t get away from the fact it (the record) was hanging over me and I was just pleased to get the goal
“As a youngster with little knowledge of Burnley before I came here, I have to say I’d not really heard of Ray Pointer, but it’s great to be up there alongside someone recognised as a club great.”
Austin, whose spell began with a hat-trick in September’s 5-2 victory over Peterborough at Turf Moor, added: “I am trying to score every time I go on the pitch at the moment and it seems to be going well.
“The important thing is the three points and it was just nice to be on the end of a late goal because it’s happened to us a few times this season.”
