Chris Wood and his striking colleagues are looking to step up and keep the Clarets moving after getting a first point on the board.
A 0-0 draw at West Bromwich Albion ended Burnley’s run of three defeats to start the Premier League season and lifted them off the foot of the table.
Sean Dyche’s men could have been celebrating an opening win from an upbeat performance had they been more clinical in front of goal, Wood heading their best chance against the crossbar in the second half.
The New Zealander is the only one of Burnley’s strikers to have found the net in the league so far and he knows that output has to grow to capitalise on the Clarets’ other strengths after goalkeeper Nick Pope chalked up his first clean sheet of the campaign.
“We probably should have won. We had a couple of good chances that we should be putting away, myself included,” admitted Wood after his near miss contributed to the first goalless draw in the top-flight so far this season.
“That one I have to be more clinical with, I know that. I’m disappointed with that one.
“But we look forward to the positives. We’ve got a point on the board now and we can build from this to go into the next games.
“It was much better and back towards what we know. That’s how we’re supposed to be playing. We are solid and we build from a clean sheet.
“The defence was absolutely superb, so we take our hats off to them because they’ve done their job and now we’re going to have to do ours at the top of the pitch.”
The Clarets are now preparing to return to Turf Moor for the first time in a month when they face Tottenham Hotspur next Monday night.
Chelsea are then the visitors in a testing double-header against sides who are among the leading scorers in the division.
But Wood insists the fixture list hadn’t added to the pressure to end the losing start at the Hawthorns.
“It wasn’t necessarily important to get something on the board with the games coming up,” added the striker whose goals have helped the Clarets take four points from the past two games against Tottenham at Turf Moor.
“We know they’re tough, but we’ve had good records against them both in recent years.
“We’re up for the challenge and hopefully we will get some more points.”
