Chris Wood celebrated one of the best days of his life after scoring the hat-trick that put the Clarets on the brink of Premier League safety.
Wood led Burnley to a brilliant 4-0 win at Wolves which lifted Sean Dyche’s men to 14th in the table – nine points clear of the relegation places with five games to go. The striker scored three times in a stunning first-half display to claim his first Premier League hat-trick and first in a Burnley shirt.
His treble was the fourth of his career and first since he scored three times for Leicester City in a League Cup tie at Carlisle United in August, 2013.
And he admitted things don’t get much better as a late Ashley Westwood strike at Molineux completed Burnley’s biggest-ever away win in the Premier League.
“It’s been one of the best days of my life. It really has,” said Wood, who has now hit double figures in the top-flight in each of his four seasons as Claret.
“It’s amazing. It’s something I’ve always wanted in my career. It’s nice to finally happen.
“It’s been a long time coming. I’m 29 years old now and I’m over the moon it’s finally come, which is nice.
“It’s been a tough season, there’s no getting away from it, for me as a striker and the other strikers as well.
“Speaking for myself, it’s been tough. We didn’t have the first six months of the season we wanted and we knew we had to dig in and fight.
“I’m glad that all the strikeforce has come into the fold now and the goals have been coming for everybody.”
Since returning from injury at the end of February, Wood has been in scintillating form and has now struck six times in six games at a pivotal point of the campaign.
Wolves couldn’t live with the New Zealand international, who scored twice in six minutes to put the Clarets 2-0 up before heading home a Dwight McNeil corner a minute before the break to become the first player since Michael Owen in 1998 to score a first-half Premier League hat-trick away from home.
The Clarets simply never let up as they continued to over-run a Wolves side which had won its two previous games to sit in mid-table.
And ending a run of three successive defeats in such emphatic fashion lifted Burnley above Newcastle and Southampton on goal difference and further away from the bottom three.
“We have made it hard work for everybody else, especially the ones right down at the bottom, and that’s what we need to do,” added Wood, who also became Burnley’s all-time leading scorer in the Premier League with his first of the afternoon.
“Another win will do it and then we go from there.
“It’s just fantastic and I’m overjoyed with the team performance. Coming together again and putting in a strong performance is fantastic.
“We have been playing well over the last six or seven games.
“We didn’t get the results in the last three, but we played well at Southampton, played well against Newcastle in the first half and played extraordinarily well against Man United.
“We knew if we carried on in that line we would come here and cause them a lot of problems.
“It was a nice start from the lads and we took it from there. Everyone was fantastic. It was a proper team moment.”
