Aspiring coaches learn from the pros

Last week, Burnley FC held their third Women and Girls Coaching Scheme insight day at the training ground.

Participants attended a women’s first-team training session and met members of the Burnley FC Women’s playing and support staff, including Interim Head Coach Ross Wallace.

The scheme is designed to inspire women and girls aged 16 and over to pursue a future in coaching by taking part in a series of insight sessions, hearing from coaches from across the Club and its charitable arm – Burnley FC in the Community.

These sessions explore different pathways into coaching and what makes an effective coach.

As part of the programme, each participant has been assigned a mentor and the Club has funded their Introduction to Coaching, Introduction to First Aid in Football, Safeguarding Children, and EFAiF qualifications.

During the insight day, the group took part in a workshop with Burnley FC in the Community’s Female Football Manager Rebecca Aldred, which focused on how to prepare for observing a live training session.

After heading pitch side to watch the Women’s team train, participants had the opportunity to ask questions and gain insight from Wallace, Goalkeeping Coach Jordan Booth, Performance Analyst Roma Malik, and Operations Executive Hannah Evans.

They discussed their career pathways, the importance of teamwork in football, the Women’s team’s successful season, and the impact of different coaching styles in achieving the best results.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Lead, Georgia Hargreaves, said: “For us, the Women and Girls Coaching Scheme is something that really stands out from what other clubs offer.

“It provides girls and women with a unique opportunity to access behind-the-scenes experiences and learn from the very best.

“We hope to see some of the girls who go through this programme on the pitch coaching one day, which is why it’s so important they hear from professionals so early on in their careers.”

Ahead of the new season, we are preparing to launch the second year of our Women and Girls Coaching Scheme.
