Burnley FC Women made it two wins in two with a 1-0 success over Stoke City Women at the County Ground in Leyland.
Millie Ravening’s penalty in time added on at the end of the first half was enough to seal all three points against the Potters in front of 291 people, a record crowd for a Claret Women home game.
Jonathan Morgan made one change to his side from the opening day win away at Derby County Women, with Ella Kinzett coming into the side for her full debut and Olivia Greenalgh dropping out of the squad.
Emma Taylor and Amaya Coleman-Evans were both named in the squad for Burnley's first home game of the campaign, as substitutes, alongside Courtney Willis.
First Half
The Claret Women started the brighter and after Leah Embley appeared to have been brought down but referee Cristiana Hattersley waved away the appeal, Evie Priestley saw a shot smothered by Stoke goalkeeper Liz Craven.
Embley then saw a shot of her own kept out by Craven, while the shot stopper also held onto a strike from Ellie May.
After a scrappy period in the game with stoppages for either side, Burnley captain Lauren Bracewell held onto a header from Callan Barber.
Abby Hunt was also close to handing Stoke a lead, inches away from connecting with a low cross, with May then trying her luck on the half volley from range and seeing her effort go inches over the bar with Craven well beaten.
It had appeared as though it would remain goalless come the break, but with the clock ticking over into added time, Priestley was dragged down inside the area having beaten her marker.
The defender avoided any form of caution, but Ravening stepped up to slot home from 12 yards and hand Morgan’s side the lead at the interval.
Second Half
A defensive slip at the back in the first 30 seconds of the restart meant Bracewell had to react quickly to keep out Hunt’s attempted lob before Alanta Brown wet close for Burnley from range.
‘Keeper Bracewell then leaped acrobatically to deny Beth Roberts’ own strike from distance, with Lucy Walsh standing tall to block Kelsey Richardson’s volley in the box.
Stoke were building pressure, and just after the hour-mark were awarded a dubious penalty of their own with Bracewell adjudged to have felled an attacker amidst a scramble for the ball.
Burnley’s number one was booked in the process having taken a knock, but got herself back up and provided a big moment in the game with a save to keep out Barber’s effort from 12 yards.
The Claret Women strengthened their attacking prowess from the bench, with substitutes Coleman-Evans – signed less than 24 hours prior – and Sarah Greenalgh – involved for the first time this season – combing well.
Greenalgh flashed a cross across the face of goal on 71 minutes, but nobody was there to connect with the ball. The pair again combined seven minutes later as Greenalgh was denied at the back post with Craven’s feet, millimetres between the ball crossing the line.
And despite being unable to add to their advantage, Burnley stood strong at the back to keep their opponents out and seal a clean sheet to ensure a 1-0 margin was enough.
Morgan’s side return to action back at the County Ground next Sunday – September 4 – against Huddersfield Town Women in a 14:00 kick-off.
