Clarets aim to end successful week on a high

Burnley Women are eyeing a third straight league victory when they travel to Stoke City’s Wellbeing Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Clarets are one of two Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League’s two unbeaten teams and head into this match on the back of a dramatic late win over Liverpool Feds.

An eventful night eventually finished 3-2 to Burnley on Wednesday, and it was Aimee Kelly who grabbed the headlines with a 92nd minute winner.

Yana Daniëls opened the scoring with three on the clock and after a near 40 minute delay for the pitch to be cleared of standing water, there were two further goals before half-time.

Feds equalised through Katie Anderson but a fine team move from back to front was rounded off by Claudia Walker’s close-range finish to make it 2-1.

Lou Roberts’ side were pegged back once again by an unfortunate own goal but they never gave up, and Kelly latched onto a long pass through the middle of the pitch to finish well and spark jubilant celebrations.

Because of that win Burnley remain top of the table with 20 points from a possible 24, ahead of Wolverhampton Wanderers who have a game in hand.

Stoke City have had what could be described as a mixed start to their campaign, winning three and drawing another of their seven league outings.

The Potters have won back-to-back matches in all competitions, though, including a 2-1 victory at Derby County on Wednesday night.

Derby took a 1-0 lead into the half-time break but it was two former Burnley players who won it for Stoke, with Evie Priestley and Abby Clarke both finding the back of the net.

Prior to that they put seven past Sutton Coldfield Town in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup, and there have also been league victories over Middlesbrough and Sporting Khalsa in 2025/26.

Head Coach Sarah Richardson has been in charge of Stoke since June 2025, having been part of the coaching staff at Loughborough Lightning as they won promotion to the third tier.

Priestley and Clarke aren’t the only familiar faces in the Potters squad, with Lucy Farrell, Dom Cooper, Lucia Molinari, and Bella Reidford all having previously played for Burnley.

Supporters are welcome to get behind the team in person at Wellbeing Park (ST15 0NF), with tickets available to purchase on the gate.

Entrance is £3 for adults and £1 for concessions, with card payments accepted. Parking is also available on a first come first served basis.
