Burnley Women return to league action this weekend in a top-of-the-table clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers at the County Ground in Leyland.

Sunday afternoon’s 2pm kick-off is a chance for the Clarets to return to the league’s summit after 13 rounds of fixtures, though the unbeaten visitors will provide stiff competition.

Lou Roberts' side head into it on the back of 11 straight wins in all competitions, the most recent of which came against Peterborough United in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

It finished 7-0 on Sunday 14th December, with Charlie Chadwick’s 14th goal of the season breaking the deadlock.

Yana Daniëls made it 2-0 before half-time and the Clarets stepped on the accelerator after the break with Millie Ravening, Charley Docherty and Emma Siddall netting in addition to Claudia Walker’s brace.

After 12 league matches the Clarets have 32 points from a possible 36 and are behind this weekend’s opponents by two points.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are also yet to be beaten in the league in an impressive first half of the campaign.

The Midlanders have recorded 11 wins from their 12 matches, with the only blemish coming against Burnley back in August.

They finished 2025 with a 3-0 Black Country derby victory over West Bromwich Albion on Sunday 21st December, in which captain Anna Morphet opened the scoring with a ninth-minute Olimpico.

Amber Hughes doubled their lead within 20 minutes and Amy Sims added extra gloss to the scoreline with one minute of regular time remaining.

Dan McNamara has been in charge of the team since 2018 and was made the club’s first ever full-time manager in August 2024.

Players to look out for include captain Morphet, a defender who joined from Aston Villa in 2018, and top scorer Hughes, who has 13 goals to her name in all competitions.

There are some familiar names in the Old Gold squad too, with Georgia Marshall, Louanne Worsey and Anna Grey all wearing Burnley claret last season.

There was nothing to separate these two teams the last time they met, which was back in August at Wolves’ SEAH Stadium.

Burnley’s second league game of the season finished goalless that day, with both defences working hard to thwart quality chances.

Tickets for this match at the County Ground, Leyland (PR25 2LF) can be purchased on the day, although Burnley men’s team season ticket holders can get in for free by showing their season ticket at the turnstiles.
